You need to pay attention to these 3 things when taking a fasting test

Many laboratory tests in hospitals now require fasting blood tests. What is fasting? What should diabetic patients pay attention to during fasting tests?

what is fasting

Not skipping breakfast means fasting. Fasting means maintaining a normal diet the day before blood drawing, eating a light dinner, not drinking alcohol, nor stimulating drinks such as strong tea and coffee, after 20:00 in the evening (no more than 22:00 at the latest) 00) No more eating, no drinking or less drinking of water after getting up the next day, no breakfast, no exercise, no anger.

The best fasting time for "sugar friends" examination is 12 to 14 hours, and at least 8 hours of fasting should be ensured. Because in this state, various substances in the body of "sugar lovers" are relatively stable and balanced, avoiding the impact of dietary factors and physiological activities during the day on the test results (or in other words, the impact is very small), making it easier for doctors to compare the test results with normal reference values. Make a comparison.

3 things to note about fasting exams

1. The fasting time should not be too long. If the fasting time is too long, blood collection in a hungry state may reduce some measured values. For example, being hungry for too long may easily lead to hypoglycemia, or even fainting and shock in severe cases. In addition, if you are hungry for too long, the sensitive blood sugar regulation mechanism will mobilize the glycogen stored in the body for the body to consume, so the blood sugar level will be higher than usual, which may also lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

2. You can drink water before taking blood, but do not exceed 200 ml. You can drink a small amount of water on the morning of the blood draw and the night before. You can drink a few sips of water (50-100 ml) each time, and do not exceed 200 ml. Generally, it will not affect the test results.

3. Not all blood drawing items require fasting examination. Fasting blood sugar, blood lipids, kidney function, liver function (especially enzymes), electrolytes, etc. must be checked on an empty stomach.

Other examinations do not have strict fasting requirements, such as blood routine, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, coagulation function, tumor markers, autoantibodies, rheumatoid factor determination, myocardial markers, thyroid function, etc. Before doing these examinations, as long as you do not eat high protein or High-fat foods will do.

If you are unclear about which items require fasting and which do not require fasting, it is recommended to consult your doctor in advance. In this way, you can do fasting inspection items first, and then do other inspections after eating in time to avoid hypoglycemia due to waiting for too long.
