Skipping breakfast makes people more likely to gain weight

Some people skip breakfast either because it is too late or because they want to lose weight. A new study in the United States shows that compared with people who eat breakfast regularly, people who skip breakfast are more likely to gain weight and have a longer waistline. Skipping breakfast may lead to eating more at other times.

Mayo Clinic researchers recorded the breakfast habits of 347 healthy adults, as well as their weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and other data. The subjects were aged between 18 and 87 and had participated in the study for at least two years. The researchers divided them into categories such as those who never eat breakfast, those who rarely eat breakfast (eat breakfast 1 to 4 times a week), and those who often eat breakfast (eat breakfast 5 to 7 times a week). The results showed that people who never eat breakfast 26.7% of them met the obesity standard, while 10.9% of those who often ate breakfast met the obesity standard. In addition, after taking into account factors such as age, gender, height, and weight, people who skip breakfast have an average waist circumference that is 9.8 cm larger than those who often eat breakfast.

Researchers reported the above research results when they attended the 2018 Annual Meeting of Experimental Biology in San Diego, USA on the 22nd. Study leader Kevin Smith said: "Our study shows that no matter what age you are, eating breakfast regularly will make an important and independent contribution to achieving a healthy weight."
