Direct your diabetes life, the doctor gives you 9 suggestions

Life is like a movie, everyone is the director of life, and you are the protagonist. Now that diabetes has broken into your life, how do you set a role for it and direct your life with diabetes?

As an endocrinologist, I recommend that you take good care of your diabetes. Once it is cured, your life will naturally become more comfortable. It is recommended that you start with the following 9 details of life:

1. Check blood sugar and make sure it meets the target: including fasting blood sugar and postprandial blood sugar. The target fasting blood sugar is 4.4-7.0mmol/L, and the blood sugar 2 hours after a meal is ≤10.0 mmol/L. The frequency of monitoring is determined based on your condition and medication regimen.

2. Check glycated hemoglobin to know the effect of sugar control: the normal value of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) under standard detection methods is 4%-6%. It is recommended to check once every 3 months at the beginning of treatment, and once the target is met, it can be checked every 6 months. The target HbA1c value is <7.0%.

3. Examine the fundus: early retinopathy can be detected. Patients without diabetic retinopathy are recommended to be tested once every 1-2 years; patients with mild disease are recommended to be tested once a year, and patients with severe disease are tested once every 3-6 months. Pregnant women need to be tested more frequently.

4. Check for diabetic neuropathy: Screen for diabetic peripheral neuropathy at least once a year after diagnosis of diabetes. Patients with long duration of diabetes and microvascular complications such as fundus lesions and nephropathy should be reviewed every 3-6 months.

5. Screening for lower limb vascular lesions: Diabetic patients over 50 years old should be routinely screened for atherosclerotic lesions in the lower limbs, and those with risk factors for atherosclerotic lesions in the lower limbs (such as combined cardiovascular and cerebrovascular lesions, dyslipidemia, Patients with diabetes (hypertension, smoking, or diabetes duration for more than 5 years) should be screened for vascular disease in the lower extremities at least once a year.

6. Check blood lipids: Diabetic patients often suffer from lipid metabolism disorders. Lipid metabolism disorders can be corrected by checking blood lipids. Blood lipids should be tested at least once a year. For those receiving lipid-lowering drugs, the number of tests can be increased based on the need to evaluate the efficacy.

7. Liver function, kidney function and urinary albumin: initial examination and annual follow-up examination are required.

8. Height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and urine routine: initial examination, follow-up examination, quarterly follow-up examination and annual follow-up examination are required.

9. Check heart function: People with diabetes are prone to diabetic heart disease, so they should also check various heart indicators regularly.

In fact, in life, we cannot do everything perfectly, but only by paying attention to the details in everything can we move towards perfection and success.

The devil is in the details, and this is still true when it comes to managing diabetes.
